Better Roads for a Developing India

Roads lay the foundation for a developed economy by facilitating connectivity. In its current phase, the need of the hour for the growth of the Indian Economy is facilitation of trade with better connectivity and hence, higher emphasis is laid on our nation's infrastructure. This is particularly true for the roads in the country as they remain the most common mode of transport for the people. To make better roads in India, we need smarter planning and durable construction, using modern materials and stricter quality checks.

Technology and data-driven monitoring can ensure efficiency, while dedicated funds and performance-based contracts improve maintenance. A focus on road safety, sustainability, and institutional reforms will create stronger, safer, and greener road networks for the long term.

India’s highways remain critical to its growth, especially as automobile and freight traffic surge nationwide. From just ₹510 billion (≈ US$ 6.9 billion) in capital expenditure during 2013–14, annual investment in road infrastructure climbed dramatically to ₹2.4 trillion (≈ US$ 29 billion) by 2022–23 a nearly 5-fold increase.

Over the past decade, the National Highways network expanded from ~91,300 km in 2014 to ~146,200 km by March 2025, reflecting a 60% growth; high-speed corridors grew from just 93 km to 2,474 km. This extraordinary scale-up underscores the government’s commitment to infrastructure, with both public and private sectors playing pivotal roles.
